What is inflammation?

Q&A
1 min read

Inflammation is a natural biological response to harmful stimuli like injury, infection and toxins. This complex, highly coordinated immune response is a vital part of the body’s spectacular defense and repair system.

Acute inflammation is localized, short-term and vital to the body’s healing process. It usually lasts for a few hours or a few days.

However, when one or more of the inflammatory pathways are dysregulated, a prolonged inflammatory response can develop. This response can harm rather than heal the body.

Chronic inflammation has been linked to the onset and progression of various diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, auto-immune and neurodegenerative diseases.

It is triggered by a variety of factors, including  long-term exposure to irritants, recurring acute inflammatory episodes, autoimmune disorders and oxidative stress.
